Fazlur Rahman Khan, Architect

Fazlur Rahman Khan was a Bangladeshi-American structural architect and engineer. He started significant structural systems for skyscrapers. Khan was also a founder in computer aided design known as CAD. He was the designer of the Sears Tower renamed as Willis Tower. It is the tallest building in the world until 1998. There are at list hundred stories included of John Hancock Center.

He escorted in a revival in skyscraper building during the second half of the 20th century. He has been called the Einstein of structural engineering.  He had also the Greatest Structural Engineer of the 20th Century. His had innovative use of structural schemes that linger fundamental to modern skyscraper construction.

Fazlur Rahman Khan was born on 3rd April of 1929 in Dhaka City during Pakistan period. He passed his childhood at Bhandarikandii village in the Faridpur District. His father’s name was Abdur. He was a high school teacher in mathematics and textbook writer. Khan had become the Director of Public Instruction. After retirement he served as Principal of Jagannath College in Dhaka.

Khan studied at Armanitola Government High School in Dhaka. Then he studied Civil Engineering in India. He received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. After that he received Scholarship to travel to the United States in 1952. He studied there at Urbana-Champaign. Khan earned two master’s degrees in three years from there.

Khan helped introduce design methods and concepts for efficient use of material in building architecture. His instructed building to employ into the tube structure. It was Chestnut De-Witt apartment building. He became remaindered for his designs during the 1960 and 1970. He was the broad partner in SOM.

Khan died on 27th March in 1982 when he was fifty years old in Jeddah of Saudi Arabia. He was buried in Chicago.
